WHAT IS CROCHET? AND HOW TO START: introduction to crochet.

Have you heard about crochet? are you confused or mixing it up with the term knitting ? Looking for a way to learn and don’t know how to start? well you are at the right place. And you will get answers to most of your questions if not all.

       Crochet can be use to create every wearable { blanket, tops, sweater, hat e.t.c} and even decorating items just from a crochet hook to create them from loops of yarn. This is a very fun and relaxing hobby and also a great business to start.

   In this blog post, i’m going to tell you everything you need to know before you begin because you don’t want to get too frustrated along the way.



what is crochet?

crochet is an handcraft or a needlecraft in which the basic materials to start is the crochet hook and crochet yarn. There are other needed materials but with this two you are good to start.
The word crochet is gotten from a French word which means HOOK, it is traces all back to the 1800s and believed to have originated from either Arabia or China.

     They are a lot of items you can create with crochet. Some popular items are: Blanket, Scarf, Hat, Tops and many more. You can crochet anything you want all you have to do is imagine and get it right.

  • Pair of sock
  • Simple tops
  • Tote bag
  • Dish cloth. 



Differences between crochet and knitting.

       Crochet and knitting are very similar as they both require hook and yarn and it is also creating fabrics from loops of yarn. There are both needlecraft work and can be use to create all those project above. 
       The main differences between them is that crochet is worked with a single hook while knitting requires two needle. Another different is that crochet is faster than knitting.
      
Between crochet and knitting I can not say which is easier as it depends on what you are more interested with. 

But here are few reasons why crochet can be easier to learn than knitting

  • crochet require just one hook, so that saves time.
  • with crochet, it is easier to correct mistake by losing a few stitch and redo.
  • The stitches and patterns are easier to learn and less complicated than knitting.
But you can learn the two if you want.

How to start crocheting.  

  • Learn with a challenging but not difficult project, you don’t want to be frustrated while trying to crochet.
  • Start with simple stitch such as the single crochet, Half double crochet, Double crochet. This are the popular and easy pattern stitch you can use and there are more easy beginner stitch online.
  • Don`t rush, take your time and remember that practice makes progress       

 Ways to learn crocheting 

      When you want to learn something, you need to understand yourself, how you learn and how fast your can cope. when you understand this, learning new stuff will be easier and less frustrating.

There are three ways to learn crocheting which are:

    1. TUTORIAL; if you are the type that understand better by viusal then tutorials is good for you. Download tutorials from places like YOU TUBE where you watch, practice and learn together.
    2. PHYSICAL CLASSES; You can also attend crochet classes at your local store, this way you get corrected better.
    3. CROCHET BOOKS/ GUIDELINES ; This are books either online or physical where written tutorials, instructions or guild lines are there for you to follow.

    • CROCHET HOOK; This comes in different sizes and type from 0.75mm to larger ones like 25.00mm. you can start with any size you are comfortable with.
    • YARN; Yarn also comes in different size, texture, color, and design. When crocheting you have to decide the size of yarn you are using and that will also determine the size of crochet hook you will be using. As a beginner worsted weight yarn [medium weight yarn or 4] is best for you.
    • SCISSORS; To cut
    • MEASURING TAPE; This is another important material as you need to take measurement .Remember, you and the person tutorial you are watching can be different in height or body size.
    • DARNING NEEDLE; To weave in the end after you fasting off.
